The word Ramadan means “scorcher” in Arabic and comes from an Arabic word 'ramida' meaning intense heat and it is believed that during this month all sins can be burned away. Fasting during Ramadan is the essential religious duties of all adult Muslims. According to the Qur'an, Fasting begins each morning when “the white thread can be distinguished from the black thread of dawn.” It continues until sunset. The time when they break their fast is called Iftar. Avoiding immoral behavior and anger and showing compassion is part of the requirements of the fasting.
How to celebrate Ramadan in Dubai
Ramadan in Dubai is a unique and different experience due to the fact that people from different parts of the world live and bring their own cultural heritage to this cosmopolitan city.
The working hours are slightly altered During Ramadan and all restaurants and coffee shops remain closed from dawn to sunset. While Public Restaurants and coffee shops outside hotels remain closed during the day, Restaurants at hotels remain open during the day and food and drinks are freely served in those areas. Each hotel has a different policy on which and how many food & drink outlets are open.
While non-Muslims are not required to fast, they are obliged by law not to eat, drink or smoke in all public areas such as streets, shopping malls, cars and public offices during the fasting hours. All hotels currently serving alcohol can also serve after Iftar i.e. from 7:00pm until 02:00am.
In Ramadan it is advisable to have conservative clothes when out in public areas especially during the day. Swim suites are allowed on Private beaches.
For one entire month all consumption for pleasure, whether of food, drink, sex or cigarettes, is prohibited between the hours of dawn and dusk. Faithful followers of Islam are obliged to adhere to these strictures, eating only during the hours of darkness: the breakfast at dusk can be quite a feast! At the end of the month, when the new moon is sighted in the sky, the city sheds its sombre cape and celebrates madly for three days.
Gifts are exchanged between friends and relatives, and there is dancing and merriment. Women decorate their hands with beautiful henna patterns. The festival brings together the entire community, often with the excuse of luscious banquets and late-night celebrations.
Dubai is a place where we have People adapting Western Culture and also the most modernized place, still the people value their Religion. On one hand Dubai entertains people with Concerts & Shows; on the other hand they also have Promotions for The Holy Month of Ramadan to focus on Charity.
